River Stone-Merlot

🍷 River Stone 2020 Merlot

Aged 18 months in French oak • Rated around 91–92 points-SavorNW 2024

Appearance:

Deep ruby‑red colour with medium‑deep intensity—a hallmark of BC’s rocky, gravelly vineyard soils

Aroma:

A vibrant bouquet of: black cherry, blackberry, and black currant unfolds, with nuanced hints of sweet spice, coconut, subtle floral tones, toasted oak, and a light olive‑earth layer

Palate: Medium‑bodied and refined, this wine delivers rich flavours of cassis, plum, kirsch‑like cherry, and mocha‑licorice graphite. The mid‑palate is savoury, with firm yet softening tannins and a sleek, mineral‑driven structure. Balanced acidity keeps it lively, finishing with spice notes—think clove, white pepper and hints of tobacco

Winemaking & Terroir:

Hand-harvested from estate vines surrounding the winery, the fruit underwent fermentation in stainless steel and small tanks with 2–3 daily punch-downs. It was aged 18 months in French oak (33% new), allowing varietal character and terroir to shine through

Score & Ageing Potential:

Awarded Silver at SavorNW 2024 and scoring around 91–92 points, this gracefully ageing wine is approachable now but will evolve beautifully through 2030.

Food Pairing Suggestions:

Try with grilled flank steak, slow-cooked root vegetable stew, or roasted beef dishes—foods that stand up to its structure and bring out its savoury depth.
