River Stone Estate Winery 2020 Merlot

Emily’s smooth local red — richly layered, confidently structured, and chosen for generous dinners, relaxed entertaining, and evenings that deserve a polished Okanagan Merlot.

Emily’s Bottle Insight

Some wines earn their place in a curated case by taking you somewhere unexpected. Others belong because they make an occasion feel effortless. River Stone Estate Winery’s 2020 Merlot is Emily’s smooth and dependable red anchor.

Emily selected it for its balance of depth, familiarity, and genuine South Okanagan character. It offers the generous dark fruit people often hope to find in Merlot, supported by savoury complexity, polished structure, and a finish designed to linger beyond the first impression.

Rich without feeling difficult and serious without becoming intimidating, this is the bottle to open when dinner is substantial, the conversation is unhurried, and everyone at the table would welcome another glass.

From River Rock Vineyard to the Cellar

River Stone is a small, family-owned estate winery situated near Oliver in the South Okanagan. The estate’s River Rock Vineyard surrounds the winery and family home, while its Boulder City Vineyard lies nearby across Tucelnuit Drive.

The vineyards occupy south-facing slopes with soils composed of rock, sand, and gravel deposited during the last glacial recession. These free-draining, heat-retaining soils help create the conditions needed to ripen expressive Bordeaux red varieties such as Merlot.

Founder Ted Kane’s vineyard philosophy is grounded in patience and respect for the growing season. Rather than forcing every vintage into the same shape, River Stone works with the conditions nature provides, aiming for balanced vines, mature fruit, and wines that express the character of their site.

The 2020 Merlot was reportedly matured for approximately 18 months in French oak, including a portion of new barrels. That patient élevage supports the wine’s dark fruit, fine structure, savoury depth, and polished texture.

Emily’s Pairing Pick

This Merlot is built for food with flavour and warmth. Pair it with grilled ribeye, roast beef, lamb chops, braised short ribs, mushroom risotto, beef tenderloin, or a generous board of mature cheeses and cured meats.

Emily’s ideal pairing is a rosemary-and-garlic roast lamb served as the light begins to soften over the patio — substantial enough for the wine’s depth, but relaxed enough to let the evening unfold naturally.

Why It Belongs in Emily’s Case

The Smooth Local Red. One bottle of River Stone Estate Winery 2020 Merlot is included in Emily’s Curated Summer Case.

Every mixed case needs a bottle that feels immediately reassuring. The Niche Foch brings discovery and adventure, while the River Stone Merlot offers familiarity with greater depth, polish, and local character.

It is the dependable dinner red in the collection — approachable enough to please a broad table, yet layered and distinctive enough to reward the customer who takes time to explore it.

Emily’s Local Wine Discovery

A Merlot Shaped by Stone, Sun, and Patience

River Stone’s story begins with the belief that exceptional wine starts in the vineyard. Its vines grow on south-facing slopes where rock, sand, and gravel create naturally free-draining soils and help retain the warmth needed to mature expressive Bordeaux red varieties.

That connection between site and wine is especially meaningful in Merlot. In the right place, the grape can offer far more than simple softness—it can carry dark fruit, savoury complexity, structure, minerality, and the ability to become more harmonious with time.

I chose this Merlot because it brings confidence to the case. It has the generous fruit people recognize, but also the depth, savoury character, and polished structure that make a familiar grape feel genuinely special.
